How Biltong South Started,

Biltong South is a small home based family run business. Half SA half GB.

It all started in late 2013

During a visit to my parents house the subject of Biltong came up, Biltong? What is Biltong? How does that work? 

We got the idea from my Dad who grew up making and drying his own Biltong throughout South Africa and the UK. After a lot of questions during a family visit about his dryer that he built by himself here shortly after coming to the UK and how it worked, we decided to have a go at making our own dryer so we could make our own Biltong instead of stealing his when visiting.

We made our first ever dryer (For personal use) it was a motorcycle helmet box with a light bulb inside and a small pc fan on the side to dry what we made.  

In late 2014

With a South African background behind us we had been making our own Biltong to eat for about a year as it was quite hard to buy any online that we liked at the time. We would make around 1kg wet batches and tweak little bits here and there getting our blends better and better for every batch we had made. 

A few friends of ours often spoke about Beef Jerky and how it tasted really good. We started to offer our Biltong out to friends and family to get feedback on how it tasted and what it needed more and less of in flavours. Not really knowing how Biltong tastes and how good it can taste if you can get a recipe down to call your own. It started to become a regular thing and we enjoyed making Biltong.

We then started making Chilli Bites (As we called them back then) and hit the taste spot on, on the first trial batch we had ever made. The same great taste you get today. 

BD Biltong was our name to start with.

In early 2015

We noticed we were being asked about our Biltong by people we didn’t know, Friends of friends and their friends, they wanted to buy our Biltong! This is what made us decide to maybe change a few things.

Biltong South was it!

We had agreed to move forward with a new name and image. We were getting positive feedback from everyone about our Biltong and new name. 

We started a fresh, designed a new dryer and our first ever order was for 1kg of our Chilli Stix made from a fresh cut of Beef Silverside.

Biltong South began offering Biltong and chilli Stix and we would make 2kg batches every other week.

Early 2016 

Biltong South became its own brand of South African Ready to eat products. We began to offer all of our products online with our own website and online shop to people all over the UK.

After a while and a lot of research we decided we had to give it a go at making Boerewors. Thinking it can’t be that hard to make a sausage! Our first ever attempt failed pretty badly and we learned a lot from how and why. After a lot of thinking and re thinking we made another Boerewors sausage and got it perfect for taste and texture and have kept it the same even to this day. 

Droewors was the next challenge. We made 1kg of Droewors the same way we made the Boerewors only with thinner casings. Hung in the dryer and then the long wait began. After 5 days we had to try it and were quite shocked that we pulled it off after the first Boerewors attempt and massive failure.

We offered out the whole dry batch of Droewors as samples and everyone who ate it wanted more so we left the recipe and hadn’t changed anything about how we make it still to this day.

A lot has happened and changed from 2014 to 2016 from just making Biltong for ourselves to enjoy. To making everything we now offer and sending it all over the UK for people to enjoy with us, and we love doing so.

November 2017 

Biltong South had a lot of learning to do and wow we had to learn a lot. We had and already knew how our products tasted and how to make them, but being ready to eat meat products requires a lot of other parts you would not think about when making Biltong and Droewors ect.. and really should when buying from an online retailer. 

Biltong South are HACCP Certified and 5* rated, we can supply all of our customers the same great tasting products time after time. Also being fully council registered and working with our environmental health officers to make sure everything is spot on. 

Biltong South use only quality locally sourced Beef Silverside for all our meat ready to eat producers. And can provide full traceability for our Beef.

Biltong South have had fantastic reviews from everyone on all our products and it has all been done by fine tuning through our friends and customers taste buds.
